Spread the love

Savrasov Alexey is one of the founding members of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) and head of Moscow landscape school. He can rightly be called the founder of realistic lyric landscape in Russian art.

The artist was born in Moscow to a merchant’s family. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture where he enrolled as a student of professor Karl Rabus. At the same school he later (1857-1882) was in charge of a landscape class.

Love of native nature, thorough studying of it, and hard work helped Alexey Savrasov later to find his style and elaborate new aesthetical principles. Starting in 1866 some new views of the Russian countryside started to appear in the art of the master. The same subject we see in the painting Winter in the Country which is represented in the permanent exhibition.
