Romanov Sakhi is a painter, graphic artist, and film artist. He is a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, the People’s Artist of Kazakhstan, and a cavalier of the Order “Parasat”. Romanov Sakhi was born in the Kazaly district of the Kzyl-Orda region. He had lost his parents and lived in an orphanage for two years. Romanov studied at the Moscow Art School. In 1955 he graduated from the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography, where his teachers were F.S. Bogorodsky, Y.I. Pimenov, G.M. Schegal. The artist has participated in different exhibitions since 1949. He worked at the Kazakhfilm studio and was a production designer for many films. It became reflected later in his easel works.
Romanov’s painting is energetic, colourful, and spectacular, marked by the stamp of originality and the brightness of his figurative language. The first impression of nature is significant for the artist. His paintings aspire to laconism, dynamism, and artistic imagery. While working on portraits, the artist always looks for the active source in the character of each person. His portraits are first and foremost an expression of a person’s will to act, an embodiment of inner perseverance and strength of character. Even in the most outwardly calmly composed images of a person, he emphasizes the hidden tension of emotion. Such is his work of museum collection called My Grandfathers from the series Scenes from Life.
