Sea always played an important role in the life of Hollanders. Interest in the depiction of seamen and fishers fostered a new kind of landscape genre, the naval landscape.
The Marine Landscape of the museum collection is not big. The artist however managed to create the impression of big space. The sky is the major part of the painting. The immensity of sea space is aggravated by the perspective contraction of ships and of changing their colour. It comes from dark in the foreground to light silver at the horizon. The overall bluish-gray background conveys the haze of humid air and gives unity to the entire landscape. The charm of the picture lies in the illusory nature of the lovingly painted details with a poetic perception of the surrounding nature.
